Abena celebrates local victory as double decker buses to be introduced on overcrowded 244

Local Member of Parliament for Erith and Thamesmead, Abena Oppong-Asare, has welcomed Transport for London’s (TfL) announcement that double-decker buses will finally be introduced on the consistently overcrowded 244 route, following years of campaigning by local residents, community groups and representatives.

The change will significantly increase passenger capacity on the busy route, which serves key local areas including Shooters Hill, Woolwich, Thamesmead, and Abbey Wood. TfL confirmed that the new double-decker buses will be phased in over the coming months, alongside updated journey planning information and stop notices.

This marks a major milestone in a long-running local campaign. Back in 2017, TfL proposed wide-ranging route changes, including making the 244 double-decker, but these plans never materialised – leaving residents increasingly frustrated.

The issue has been of particular concern to Shooters Hill residents and members of the Shrewsbury Park Residents’ Association, who have highlighted overcrowding for nearly a decade.

Since taking on Shooters Hill as part of her constituency in 2024, Abena Oppong-Asare MP has repeatedly raised the issue with TfL – experiencing the overcrowding herself and pressing for urgent improvements.

“This is fantastic news for local residents who have been raising concerns about overcrowding on the 244 for many years.

“It was vital for me to raise this directly with TfL and I’m delighted that they have listened to our community and agreed to introduce double-decker buses. This will make a real difference for commuters, the elderly, school pupils and families who rely on this service every day.

“I’d like to pay tribute all those who together have worked tirelessly over the years to keep this issue on the agenda. This is a great example of what we can achieve when residents and representatives work together.”

TfL had previously indicated that an update would be provided in early autumn 2024, but no confirmation followed. The latest announcement now confirms concrete plans to increase capacity, with double-decker buses being phased in after changes to stopping arrangements in Thamesmead.

Another Month of Local Wins for Erith and Thamesmead

This month has brought some great wins for our constituency of Erith and Thamesmead. Here are a few key updates and what they mean for residents like you:

  • Renters’ Rights Bill Becomes Law – Delighted to celebrate this momentous moment alongside the implementation of the first phase of Awaab’s law, which promises to protect tenants from dangerous social housing conditions. For too long, families have faced insecurity, sudden evictions, and poor housing. Over 115,000 renters across Greenwich and Bexley will now have stronger protections, safer homes and real peace of mind. Find out more here.
  • New £80m Back to Work Funding – Vital Government package will help people overcome barriers to employment and get back into work. Find out more here.
  • Plumstead Police Station Front Counter to Stay Open – After making representations to the Met Police and the Deputy Mayor, I’m pleased the front counter in Plumstead will stay open. Find out more here.
  • New Family Hub for Bexley – Delighted to welcome this new investment in Bexley to support children and families, alongside expanded childcare and new free breakfast clubs right here in our community. Find out more here.
  • Thamesmead shortlisted for ‘New Towns’ Programme – Pleased to see our community being prioritised as an area to deliver new homes, improve transport links – with a possible DLR extension – and create local jobs. Find out more here.
  • Extra Funding to tackle Homelessness – Homelessness has doubled since 2010, ruining too many lives. I’m glad to see an £84 million boost this month, including over £640,000 for Bexley and Greenwich. Find out more here.

I’m proud of the progress we’re making and will keep working hard to deliver for everyone in Erith and Thamesmead.

Morris Mission Event

I was so pleased to be at the launch of Morris Mission CIC on Friday 10th October. From first meeting Shantel Morris at an advice surgery last year, it’s amazing to see the growth of Morris Mission and the progress that her and the team are making to support those affected by homelessness in the area.

Visit to Shooters Hill Tennis Club

Fantastic to receive such a warm welcome from the team at Shooters Hill Lawn Tennis Club (SHLTC). It’s a thriving and well-maintained club with bold ambitions for the future. Looking forward to being back there soon.

Visit to Age UK Bexley at Belvedere Community Centre

The Age UK Bexley team at Belvedere Community Centre are not only committed to championing the wellbeing of Bexley’s elderly residents, but also supporting the broader initiatives of the Community Centre. It was great to visit and witness this commitment first hand.

Visit to Guru Nanak Durbar Erith & Belvedere Sikh Temple

Really enjoyed the opportunity I had to meet with members of the committee at Erith & Belvedere Sikh Temple and see the development of the temple as it nears completion.

Poppy Appeal at Morrisons

Delighted to join Thamesmead and Abbey Wood’s Royal British Legion to launch their Poppy Appeal this year. It was a privilege to contribute to the appeal and have a chance to reflect on remembrance. Thanks also to the team at Morrisons in Thamesmead for hosting the appeal.

Remembering John O’Rourke

This month, I was honoured to attend the funeral of John O’Rourke, a great local champion and Chair of the Royal British Legion Branch in Thamesmead and Abbey Wood. It was a privilege to know John and to open the Children’s Memorial at Abbey Wood Garden earlier this year – a wonderful project he cared deeply about. He will be greatly missed.

Very pleased to join the BAMEx Staff Network at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust this month to talk about my journey into politics and what Black History Month means to me. Grateful for the chance to meet and hear from many passionate NHS staff from our community.

Celebrating Black History Month

I’m proud to celebrate Black History Month and to honour those who have shaped our nation and continue to drive positive change in their communities. This year, I was delighted to attend a number of significant receptions – at City Hall with the Mayor of London, in Parliament with the Speaker of the Commons, and at the Foreign Office and 10 Downing Street with the Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, and the Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy. It was inspiring to see so many outstanding voices embodying this year’s theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.”

My work in Parliament as PPS to the Prime Minister

As I mentioned in my previous update, I have recently taken on the role of Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Prime Minister. Over the past month, I’ve been focused on helping the Prime Minister prepare for Prime Minister’s Questions each Wednesday and on working closely with my parliamentary colleagues to advance the Government’s Plan for Change. I’m committed to delivering meaningful results for residents in Erith and Thamesmead and across the country.

Furthermore:

  • Manchester Synagogue Attack – My thoughts remain with the victims of this terrible attack in Manchester, their loved ones, and the wider Jewish community. I welcome the Government’s announcement of up to £10 million in emergency funding to help protect synagogues and Jewish schools across the country.
  • Peacehaven Mosque Fire – I have also been deeply concerned by this shocking act of arson and stand with the Home Secretary and Prime Minister in condemning it. I also welcome the Government’s commitment of £10 million to strengthen security and protect Muslim communities across the UK.
  • Nepal Flooding – Important to share my deepest sympathy to all those impacted by the tragic flooding in Nepal this month. My thoughts are especially with our local Nepalese community here, who I know have be worried for loved ones.
  • Welcomed Community Hospice to Parliament – Delighted to welcome Kate Heaps and her team at Community Hospice, where I’m a Patron, to Parliament for Hospice Care Week.
  • New Youth club in Thamesmead East – Residents have been asking for a new youth space for years, and I’ve been proud to raise it alongside them – now it’s finally happening! Massive thanks to local Cllr Zainab Asunramu for leading the charge.
  • Three Rivers Bexley Awarded £1m to Boost Arts & Culture – Great to hear that Three Rivers Bexley are getting £1m from Arts Council England to boost arts & culture in our community.
  • Yom Kippur and Sukkot – Pleased to mark these important moments of reflection and celebration with our Jewish community in Erith and Thamesmead this month.
  • Happy Diwali – Wished everyone celebrating in Erith & Thamesmead and across the country a very Happy Diwali this month.
  • World Mental Health Day – Proud to mark this important annual day and support Young Minds UK by wearing yellow out in the community.
