Chancellor’s Spending Review and an update on our ‘Plan for Change’

This June, the Chancellor’s Spending Review 2025 focused on securing Britain’s future – investing in our NHS, economy, and national security to improve the lives and livelihoods of people in Erith and Thamesmead and across the country.

Key highlights include:

  • An £11 billion boost to defence spending
  • Record investment in the NHS
  • A £39 billion new Affordable Housing Plan

As part of the Government’s ‘Plan for Change’, I’m also pleased that the Warm Homes Discount will reach 2.7 million more families this year, doubling access to vital support for over 6 million households.

As well as this, it’s important to see that the Winter Fuel Payment has been extended to all pensioners earning £35,000 or less, supporting around 9 million people, or over three-quarters of all pensioners.

Free School Meals are similarly being expanded to over 500,000 more children, including many here in Erith and Thamesmead. You can find more on my website here.

Finally, it was encouraging to see the Chancellor’s commitment in the recent Spending Review to work with TfL on extending the DLR to Thamesmead. Back in my maiden speech in 2020, I highlighted that Thamesmead remains one of the few areas in London without a train station. I’ve campaigned for years to change that – you can learn more about my work on this issue on my website here. I assure you I will be following developments closely.

All these steps will make a real difference, but I know challenges remain. I’m committed to delivering the support our community needs – today and for the future.

Visit to London South East Colleges (LSEC) Greenwich Campus

Had a great visit to LSEC’s Greenwich Campus in Plumstead this month. The redevelopment of the college looks great with lots of local history thoughtfully incorporated. It was also lovely to take part in a question-and-answer session with their ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students – hearing their stories was very inspiring. Thanks to the whole LSEC team for their warm welcome.

Unveiling the new Children’s plaque at Abbey Wood Memorial Garden

Honoured to unveil the new Children’s section and plaque at Abbey Wood Memorial Garden. The garden, entirely volunteer-run under the dedicated leadership of Secretary John O’Rourke, has been 11 years in the making. It was a privilege to join the team, local community, and veterans for such a meaningful occasion. Congratulations to John and all involved on this remarkable achievement.

Opening Plumstead Make Merry

Delighted to open the Plumstead Make Merry festival on its 50th anniversary year! A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful volunteers and all who attended for the warm welcome. Community events like this celebrate the rich diversity and unity of our constituency. Thanks to the dedicated volunteers who made it all run so smoothly.

Bexley Tigers Awards Ceremony

It was a pleasure to join Bexley Tigers Basketball Club on Saturday 14 June for their 2025 End-of-Season Awards Ceremony. A great opportunity to celebrate their achievements over the past year, present awards and meet some of their inspiring young athletes, coaches and volunteers. Congratulations also to the girl’s team for being selected to represent Bexley in the 2025 London Youth Games!

DLR extension to Thamesmead

TfL has released more details on plans to extend the DLR to Thamesmead. You can learn more and take part in the consultation – open until 17 August – on their website.

I recently toured Thamesmead Waterfront with Deputy Mayor Seb Dance, Greenwich Council Leader Cllr Anthony Okereke, and James Asser MP to hear about plans for new homes, local jobs, and the DLR extension. It’s also been encouraging to see the Chancellor commit to working with TfL on this project in the Spending Review this month. I’ll be following progress closely.

My Campaign Summer School Deadline

This July, I’m thrilled to host my Campaign Summer School, right here in Erith and Thamesmead. The sign-up deadline is Friday 4 July 2025, so if you know someone aged 16–18 who’s still interested, please share the link below and get them to sign up.

Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill

On Friday 20 June, the House of Commons debated, voted and passed the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill at 3rd reading. I’m grateful to everyone in our constituency who took the time to share their thoughtful views with me.

After careful consideration, I voted against the Bill and explained my reasons in a letter to constituents here. I will continue to follow the Bill’s progress in the Lords closely.

Ministerial work in the Cabinet Office

Pleased to share some key progress made as a Minister in the Cabinet Office this month. Firstly, it was very valuable to visit Montenegro to see how we’re working with partners in the Western Balkans to strengthen cyber security and counter state threats through the Integrated Security Fund. You can find out more here.

Then, on Thursday 5 June, I was pleased to speak in Cabinet Office Questions to share what the Government have been doing to strengthen our national resilience. For example, I highlighted the recent launch of the UK Resilience Academy and our plans for a full national pandemic response exercise that will test the UK’s capabilities, plans, protocols and procedures in the event of another major pandemic. Finally, I was also pleased to join the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in the Commons as he announced the important new National Security Strategy. This strategy highlights the commitment the Government is making to identify the main challenges we face as a nation, especially as we enter an era of radical uncertainty and change.   • Shooters Hill College Students in Parliament – Thrilled to welcome local students to Parliament and speak to my team as they shared their inspiring work on mental health through the UOK! Programme, organised by the Mental Health Foundation.
  • Greenwich and Bexley Foodbank Visit to Parliament – Many thanks to the teams from Greenwich and Bexley Foodbanks for visiting Parliament this month to campaign on such vital local issues like ending food insecurity and more.
  • Christ Church (Erith) CofE Primary School Education Visit to Parliament – Great to hear that primary school students from Christ Church (Erith) had an exciting visit to Parliament and enjoyed a chat with my team.
  • Five Local Schools getting extra Government Funding – Thrilled to announce vital upgrades at five Erith & Thamesmead schools – thanks to the Government’s investment through the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF). Find out more on my website here.
  • New Consumer Charter for Military Families – Great to speak to the Minister for Veterans and People, Al Carns, about his work to give heroes the homes they deserve.
  • Jo Cox Anniversary– On 16 June, we marked the 9th anniversary of Jo’s tragic murder. We must continue to remember her legacy and campaign for a safer, better world.
  • Windrush Day 2025 – This Windrush Day, we honour the generation and their lasting impact. I join those who remain committed to reframing Windrush justice and welcome the announcement of the first Windrush Commissioner, Reverend Clive Foster.
  • Grenfell Tower Fire – This June, it is vital our thoughts remain with all the families and friends who lost their loved ones in the Grenfell Tower Fire just eight years ago.
  • Carers Week 2025 – This month marked Carers Week 2025, when we acknowledge the significant contributions our carers make to our society.
  • D-Day Landings Anniversary – On 6 June, it was important to mark the 81st anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Their legacy must never be forgotten.
  • Armed Forces Week 2025 – Important to reflect on and honour the great courage, dedication and sacrifices made by our veterans and service members.
  • Eid Mubarak – Best wishes and a happy Eid al-Adha to all Muslims who celebrated in Erith and Thamesmead and across the country.
  • Trooping the Colour – Pleased to join this occasion to mark the King’s Official Birthday. 
  • Pride Month – Great to mark Pride Month this June and celebrate the progress made to bring greater equality for all. Nice to hear about several local events to mark the day.

Positive steps forward through our Plan for Change

Whether it’s securing major trade deals with the EU, USA, and India, or delivering local initiatives like free breakfast clubs and tougher action on fly-tipping, this Government is taking meaningful steps to improve lives across Britain.

The economy is also recovering – it’s now the fastest-growing in the G7, and interest rates have been cut four times since the election last year. And I’m pleased that the Prime Minister has taken the decision to review the Winter Fuel Payment after listening to voters across the country. I know this will be positive news for many local residents.

Our ‘Plan for Change’ is working – but I know full well there’s so much more to do. I’m focused on building on the progress we’ve made – delivering more, delivering faster, and always with working people at the heart of it.

Fly-tipping Crackdown in Erith and Thamesmead

Fly-tipping has been a persistent issue in Erith and Thamesmead and across the country – up by a fifth in recent years, while prosecutions have fallen. Our streets and green spaces deserve better.

Having campaigned on this in Opposition, I fully back the Government’s new crackdown on rogue waste operators. For too long, fly-tippers got away with it – that ends now. Visiting New Free Breakfast Clubs at Local Schools

I’m delighted that Willow Bank Primary and Jubilee Primary – both in Erith and Thamesmead – were chosen for the first phase of the free breakfast clubs’ rollout in Primary Schools across the country.

It was lovely to visit Jubilee Primary and see the breakfast club in action. Speaking with teachers, parents, and students, it’s clear these clubs will make a real difference. Learn more on my website.

Visit to Severndroog Castle ahead of VE Day

Proud to visit Severndroog Castle and speak at their VE day celebrations and their May Producers Market. I had the pleasure of seeing the wonderful view of London at its peak and listen to the Greenwich Community Choir as well as taking part in other activities on the day. Great to be joined by Cllr Zeeshan and to see so many residents celebrating and commemorating together.

Meeting with Home Instead Dartford in Erith

This month, I was also able to visit the Home Instead Dartford office in Erith. I had a very constructive discussion with their team on the importance of local carers and our care sector. Lovely to hear about their great community work also, including their work with Christ Church, Erith and Hawksmoor Primary School in Thamesmead.

End of Mayoral Term Charity Dinner with Cllr Jit Ranabhat

Had the pleasure of attending Cllr Jit Ranabhat’s End of Mayoral Term Charity Dinner. A sincere thank you to him for his dedicated service as Mayor of Greenwich – particularly as the first mayor of Nepalese heritage.

Throughout his term, he’s made a meaningful impact by engaging with underrepresented communities and championing charitable causes. His leadership over the past year has been truly inspiring.

Speaking at Men’s Matters Meeting

Nice to join a Men’s Matters meeting at the Moorings Centre in Thamesmead. It was good to speak to them on the importance of mental health issues in men and giving residents guidance about how they access help and support in our community.

VE Day Celebrations

This month marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. It was important to remember and commemorate all those who lost their lives. You can watch a video I did to mark the day here and find out more about constituency events going forward here.

My Campaign Summer School Deadline

As you may know, this Summer I’m excited to be hosting my Campaign Summer School right here in Erith and Thamesmead. Ministerial work in the Cabinet Office

Pleased to share some key progress we’ve made in the Cabinet Office this past month.

Firstly, I joined the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster to open the new UK Resilience Academy, which will train over 4,000 professionals a year to help the UK respond to major threats.

I also visited Sheffield Hallam University to explore how government, industry, and academia can work together to build a skilled cyber workforce – crucial for our national security and economic growth.

Finally, I toured the new Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service Training Academy in Aintree – a world-class facility supporting fire and rescue teams across the UK. In Aintree, I also joined the third meeting of the Government’s national Floods Resilience Taskforce.

Keeping people safe is our top priority, and these steps are part of how we’re delivering on that mission.

Furthermore:

  • Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill – On Friday 16 May, it was the first day of Report Stage in the Commons on this important and sensitive bill. I understand that this issue is of great interest to many, and I will be closely monitoring its progress.
  • Remembering Fusilier Lee Rigby – Important to mark the 12th anniversary of the tragic murder of Lee Rigby in Woolwich. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
  • Bexley Tigers – Well done to Bexley Tigers Basketball Club, who have been asked to lead and coach Bexley’s Girl’s Basketball Team in this year’s London Youth Games.
  • Welcoming new Pope – Sharing my best wishes to the newly elected Pope Leo XIV and congratulations to all Catholics in Erith and Thamesmead on this momentous moment.
  • Happy International Nurses Day – Paid tribute this month to all those on the frontline of our NHS during International Nurses Day. Thank you!
  • Remember Monday during Eurovision – Proud to see so many cheering on Remember Monday during their Eurovision run this year. Well done on their great performance.
  • Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 – Very pleased to commemorate this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week by marking the second reading of the long awaited Mental Health Bill in the House of Commons.

Applications for my Campaign Summer School are Open

Very pleased to announce that my Campaign Summer School is back, with applications open now.

At the jam-packed 3-day school, young people between 16 and 18 will have a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the world of political and social campaigning from veteran political activists and partner organisations.

It’s taking place from Wednesday 23 July to Friday 25 July right here in Erith and Thamesmead. So if you’re interested – or know someone who might be – then find out more on my website here.

Crossness 160th Anniversary Celebration

Lovely to commemorate the 160th anniversary of Crossness this month with the Crossness Engines Trust. I was pleased to speak at the event and praise the important work done by the Trust and their volunteers in ensuring that the pumping station is publicly accessible and in such a great condition.

It was great to be joined by the Mayors of Bexley, Bromley, Dartford and Greenwich, as well former local MP John Austen and the great-great-grandson of Crossness’ achitect Sir Joseph Bazalgette, Sir Peter Bazalgette.

Visit to Jubilee Primary School

This month, I also had the pleasure of visiting Jubilee Primary School and meeting members of their School Parliament. I answered their great questions and discussed my political journey. I also had the chance to visit a Year 3 class who shared letters to me with their concerns about plastic pollution and climate change.

It is important that as many young people as possible are aware of local and national issues we face, so I was really pleased with how engaged all the students were!

TUC Black Workers’ Conference 2025

I was honoured to be invited to speak at the annual TUC Black Workers’ Conference, where I had the opportunity to share my political journey and reflect on how my union played a vital role in shaping my activism and politics.
It is essential that we continue to stand in solidarity with workers from all backgrounds and celebrate the vital contributions our diverse workforce makes to our country.

Government action to save British Steel

Proud to join the Government this month in voting to take control of British Steel. This important step will protect jobs and safeguard our security at home and abroad.

Sadly, the previous government failed to act, which made it more important that decisive action was taken this month to secure the future of the site, bringing security to the thousands of steelworkers, their families and the community of Scunthorpe.

Ministerial work in the Cabinet Office

It has been another important month in my role as a Minister in the Cabinet Office. For example, I’ve answered a number of critical written questions from other Members of Parliament on topics I’m responsible for, such as transparency data, security vetting and national security.

Additionally, I recently responded to a debate regarding the Government’s relationship with the European Union. I highlighted the positive dialogue and reset that is taking place and the vital steps being taken, like efforts to secure a UK-EU security pact, involving cooperation on foreign policy and defence, and to address trade barriers.   • Passing of Pope Francis – Deeply sad to hear about the death of Pope Francis. I share my condolences with Catholics here in Erith & Thamesmead and around the world.
  • Stephen Lawrence Day – Vital we remember Stephen on the anniversary of his murder in an unprovoked racist attack. Let’s continue to fight for equality and justice for all.
  • St George’s Day – Wishing everyone in Erith and Thamesmead – and across the country – had a very Happy St George’s Day!
  • Happy Easter – Hope all those in Erith and Thamesmead and beyond celebrating, had a lovely Good Friday and a Happy Easter!
  • Happy Passover – This month, I also want to say Happy Passover to the Jewish community here in Erith and Thamesmead and around the world.
  • Happy Tamil New Year – Very happy Tamil New Year to the Tamil community in Erith and Thamesmead, across the UK and around the world. Puthandu vazthukal!
  • Happy Vaisakhi – I would also like to wish everyone in Erith and Thamesmead and beyond a happy Vaisakhi this month! Vaisakhi di lakh lakh vadhaiyan!
  • Happy Orthodox Easter – And I want to send my best wishes to all those who celebrated Orthodox Easter this month.
  • Getting our NHS back on track – Proud to mark some great progress being made on getting our NHS back on track with Minister Ashley Dalton MP, including 700,000 extra dental appointments and ending the 8am scramble to book a GP.
  • Initial roll out of Free Breakfast Clubs this April – Very pleased to mark the Labour Government’s initial roll out of their new free breakfast clubs in 750 schools across England, including two right here in Erith and Thamesmead. 
  • Making Work Pay – So pleased to that starting April 1st, millions will have received a pay boost of up to £1,400 a year, thanks to the new Government’s National Living Wage rise.

Meeting with Luis Gilberto Murillo

In my role as Parliamentary Secretary at the Cabinet Office, it was a pleasure to meet with the Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo to discuss the importance of our UK-Colombia partnership in tackling critical global challenges.  

We discussed the UK-Colombia security partnership and resilience against climate change.

Flood Resilience Taskforce Meeting

It was important to attend the first meeting of the Flood Resilience Taskforce as Parliamentary Secretary at the Cabinet Office. The Taskforce is led by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. 

The task force brings together leaders from local government, the emergency services and local resilience forums to make communities more resilient against flooding.

Airbus UK HQ Visit

It was an honour to open Airbus Helicopters new UK headquarters and meet some of their staff and apprentices, this was done in alignment with my role as Parliamentary Secretary at the Cabinet Office,

Airbus helicopters are an important part of the UK’s security, assisting and supporting UK resilience through police, air ambulance and military helicopters.

Met Office HQ Visit

It was fascinating to visit the Met Office HQ as part of my Cabinet Office role, and learn more about one of the UK’s most essential public services. I met with staff and international partners to celebrate the pioneering work of the Space Weather Operations Centre that celebrates its 10th anniversary this month.

It was important to hear about the Met Office HQ’s approach to resilience, and I enjoyed practising my weather presenting skills in the studio.
